For the Love of the Vanity

Chrissy's Metallic Vanity
For the first time, probably ever in my life, I sat down this morning and put my makeup on.  I'm usually leaning over the bathroom sink, rushing to throw some blush on my exhausted-looking face or (sorry Sandwich Police Department), driving to the shop while putting mascara on.  I had a few extra minutes today so I sat at my vanity.  This past week, I sold my metallic gold vanity to a friend. It didn't entirely go in our bedroom and Chrissy expressed interest in it.  I was happy to replace it with a more rustic, retro vanity that my good friend and mentor, Teresa, had had in her bedroom at one time.  Teresa painted it a linen color and really distressed it.  It's over-sized round pulls are amazing. I've admired it for years now and am now it's lucky owner. Everything I know about "vintage" and painting furniture, I owe to Teresa.  She has taken me under her wing and has been incredibly supportive, loving and taught me a lot. Long, teary story short, this piece means a lot to me and I'm very grateful for meeting and becoming dear friends with her.
My New Vanity

Have I mentioned how much I love this vanity?  The two pictures on the left are of both my grandmothers. The antique floor lamp was a splurge that I regretted at one time, but happens to fit perfectly in the space.

Thanks Chrissy and Teresa!

So this morning also got me to thinking about all the vanities I've done in the past, how different each one was, and who brought them home. I've said it before, but they are my favorite piece to work on.  I thought I'd share their stories below.

This vintage vanity was an amazing find in the basement of a good friend, and my aestician, Rebecca, who owns Epiphany Skin Spa in Sandwich (her facials are unbelievable by the way).

I brought it to my old studio and when my hairdresser, Jen (who owns Classy Cuts in Sandwich... amazing as well), saw it, she loved it. It reminded her of her grandmother.  I painted it for her and it now sits in her bedroom.

Cora's Vanity

This vanity was a Christmas gift to my boyfriend's daughter, Cora. It's not the greatest picture but I love this vanity paired with a colorful pillow I bought at Pier One and next to her bright orange walls and dark pine floors.

Can you tell it belongs to a teenager? :)

Kyla's Vanity

This sweet little vanity was our latest piece.  I've seen kidney shaped vanities before but nothing like this piece with it's three curvy drawers. The pink glass knobs are adorable and I knew it belonged in a little girl's room...

It now belongs to a sweet little girl, Kyla. We love her mom, Kelly, who happens to be one of our biggest fans! We're anxiously awaiting a picture of Kyla sitting at it...

This vanity was a favorite of mine. I found this piece in an estate sale and fell in love. I decided not to distress it because of it's classy lines and simple elegance.  Paired with a decorative gold stool, this piece didn't last long. It went home as a Christmas gift for a customer's daughter.

These two beauties below were sold last summer to two women who had second homes on the Cape.  I love the one on the right... it has so much character and is a bit rickety-looking (if that makes sense?)

This brings me to our shop. We have this gorgeous vanity right now.  Although it's low, it would be perfect in a little girl's room.  I love the mirror with it's original glass.  Cara made and upholstered the bench and I love the lace. So pretty!

I have a bunch more waiting to be re-done in storage... can't wait to get to them!

Thanks for reading!

New Projects This Week!

We're busy here at MVDS! Check out our new finished projects below!

This french provincial piece is part of a set I'm working on for one of Cara's best friend's, Teresina.

It also has two matching bedside tables and another longer bureau, which was Teresina's mother's set. This is a very special project because her mom passed away from breast cancer five years ago. This past month, her father drove the set out for her from Minnesota.

I'm giving it a little face lift and I can't wait for her to see it in person!  I painted it in ASCP French Linen with Old White handles. Before and After pictures will be up soon...

How sweet is this new kidney shaped vanity?

I love the legs and the curvy middle drawer. The pink glass knobs give it a touch of color.

The old skirt was removed to modernize it and was painted in Antique White milk paint.

I'll admit that this piece isn't new to our blog... but happens to be new to our store!  I painted this piece last summer but it sat lonely in storage until we finally opened!

This secretary's desk is painted in Old White milk paint with a Covington Blue Benjamin Moore interior. It has the sweetest French legs and simple white pulls.

We're connecting with Miss Mustard Seed today. Check out her blog, she's such an inspiration!
